Terminator: Dark Fate (2019) Review

It's always a gamble when a new Terminator film is announced. In all honesty, despite my soft spot for them all (It even took me a few watches to turn on Genisys), it would be hard to call any of the films past the second "Good", some of them get points for effort in trying to something new and different (Salvation in particular), but there was always something lack with each one. When this was announced, I had no excitement, despite the whole retconning all the sequels past 2 in order to make a true sequel to Judgement Day, the involvement of Linda Hamilton and Arnold Schwarzenegger and even the first Terminator film to be adult rated since the third. None of this inspired any hope in me, I was sure this series had its day and when the abysmal trailers came along, I was more or less ready to write this off without even seeing it.

Despite having no hope for this (Especially given that 2019 seems to just be a never ending barrage of mediocre and terrible reboots/sequels), I was honestly very surprised to end up having quite a fun time with this. It definitely has its problems and relies on the franchises past a bit too much, but it is easily the best of the films since Judgement Day. For better or worse, this really is the Force Awakens of the Terminator series. 

It opens with a very ballsy and surprising creative choice that I won't spoil, but it sets the story on a path that is both familiar and fresh at the same time. The whole Terminator being sent to the past to kill the saviour of humanity plot is still there, but it mixes things up and turns it on its head just enough to feel like a story worth telling. While Arnold Schwarzenegger and Linda Hamilton are both here reprising their roles, the new players are very welcome additions to the story and were surprisingly well developed and likeable enough to invest in. Natalie Reyes' Dani is excellent here as the new saviour of humanity taken from a normal life in order to fend for her life and save the world. This was the first role I'd ever seen her in, but I was very impressed.

Mackenzie Davis also provided a very solid performance as Grace, a genetically enhanced soldier sent from the future in order to protect Dani, she handled action very well with a lot more hand to hand combat than I was expected, but at the same time still managing to deliver a human and easy to root far protector that definitely feels different from what has come before. Her bond with Dani doesn't reach the emotional heights of T2, but there's still just enough there that you do feel invested enough to care.

The big selling point is Linda Hamilton and Arnie though, that's why everyone is here to see this. How do they do? Pretty great actually. Hamilton channels the wonderful badassery of Sarah Connor that was present in T2 and it's clearly never gone away, despite the action-heavy nature of her role, there still is a deep sadness behind the character that Hamilton does a great job portraying, despite still being the same person, this Sarah Connor is a lot more damaged and mentally broken due to what the last 20 years have done to her. The performance here is very similar to Jamie Lee Curtis in the 2018 Halloween film, but I'm all for that and it was exactly what I wanted. It was great to see her back and they took the character in an interesting direction, even with some excellent de-aging effects for the opening scene.

Arnold Schwarzenegger's appearance is sure to divide fans of the series. It's a hard role to talk about without spoiling, but he doesn't make his full appearance in the second half and what they do with him is a hell of a choice. It's arguably stupid, a little bit insane and downright doesn't make sense, but it answers a question I've always wanted to know about Terminators. Even with the creative choices, Arnie himself fits back into the role effortlessly, it feels like the heart of his character from T2 is back and he's not just some one note joke they turned him into with Genisys. 

Lastly, with the cast, Gabriel Luna was much better than the trailers made him out to be. He was a bit similar to Robert Patrick's T-1000, but they do a lot of cool stuff with his character and he's a believable threat as he seems far more dangerous and advanced than all the Terminators previously. I did wish they went a bit further with violence in order to make him a bit more menacing, as it rarely lingers on the violence and aside from some CGI blood splatter, it was all pretty tame for a character that is literally slicing people up.




After the success of Deadpool, it surprised me that it took so long for Tim Miller to get another gig, but he did a far better job than I expected with this. My biggest worry is that they would try and merge the humour and violence from Deadpool into a Terminator film in order to get something that could have been a tonal disaster, but it's played remarkably straight and the lame jokes are kept to a pretty bare minimum, which is a relief, seeing as nearly every studio now is trying to cram in Marvel style lame humour into every single franchise these days.

He directs some really cool action here, which sadly seems to get more over the top and bombastic as it goes on. While I know a $180 million Hollywood franchise film wouldn't rely on practical effects, it would have been nice to see more. It opens very well with a genuinely tense and pretty thrilling freeway chase that kick-starts the story into gear very early on. That's something I should mention, I was amazed how well paced this was, even while it was over 2 hours long, it never lulled or felt boring at any point. While that opening freeway chase is awesome, the stuff towards the end feels far too over the top and CGI heavy to have much of an impact, it felt like something more from a Fast and Furious film than a Terminator film. Don't get me wrong, while this is a sci-fi franchise about killer cyborgs, the first two films managed to root it in a reality by relying on practical effects that actually made things feel weighted and real, something all the sequels (Including this) have failed to live up to. The worst is when Grace and the new Terminator are fighting, the CGI is so apparent that it feels more like watching 2 video game characters fighting than anything close to reality. It just astounds me, that 2 films from about 30 years ago managed to have more convincing and real feeling fights than a film made in 2019. 

For the third time in a row, as far as I know, this is made to be the first in a trilogy of Terminator films. While the budget seems far too high for this to make that much of a profit, I would like to see this story continue and see where they wanted to take things. For the first time in a decade, I'm genuinely interested to see where this franchise will go. Although, at the same time, it leaves it in a place that could just as easily wrap things up. Knowing Hollywood, we're gonna get a new Terminator film in some shape or form, but this works as both a wrap up of the story started with The Terminator and a passing of the torch moment for the new characters. 

Terminator: Dark Fate is a rare film for 2019 that actually exceeds expectations and makes for some very fun, but also flawed viewing that continues the story in a familiar, but fresh way that brings back old faces to good effect while also making way for new ones that are also compelling. Like I said, it's the Force Awakens of the series, it makes some decisions that will surely divide fans, but for me it just made it more satisfying and interesting. Finally a good Terminator film again.

El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie (2019) Review

Breaking Bad was something very special to me, a TV show that affected me like no other, to the point I'd call it my favourite piece of media ever made. It ended perfectly and nailed the landing where so many shows don't. I was very sceptical about the idea of a film continuing the story of Jesse Pinkman, even with the involvement of Breaking Bad's creator Vince Gilligan. I was certainly excited to go back into this world, but at the same time so ready for this to be an unnecessary disaster. 

Thankfully, this turned out to be so many things I didn't know I needed and more. El Camino follows on directly from the events of Breaking Bad's finale, showing Jesse escape his captivity and try to rebuild his life after suffering through these horrific events. It works perfectly as a epilogue to Breaking Bad, as Jesse is a character that deserved a redemptive finale after his unsure looking future based on when we last saw him.

Jesse Pinkman has always been my favourite character from Breaking Bad. While it was Walter White's story, Jesse always seemed more innocent and likeable, despite starting off as a burnout junkie loser before maturing and growing as the show went on. It was an interesting parallel to Walt, who only got worse as the show went on, while Jesse was always trying to better himself while going through the ringer when it came to horrific events and loss. 

Aaron Paul effortlessly steps back into the role, giving a powerful performance full of range and emotion. It's one of the rare times I've actually cared deeply about where things will go for a fictional character. It's amazing to see how much Jesse had changed over the course of the series. Paul portrays Jesse's emotional trauma with nuance and subtlety that brings so much to the character and events. We see a lot more of the time he spent in captivity and how twisted things got through flashbacks. 



Flashbacks has always been a trademark of Breaking Bad and used effectively. El Camino is no different, making use of showing Jesse during the events of the finale and over the course of show while bringing back some familiar faces that I won't spoil. All used to poignant and wonderful effect in order to show how much Jesse has changed. 

El Camino is exactly what I wanted in terms of plot. I love films and TV shows that put character over plot every time, taking time to get inside the characters head space rather than constantly trying to move the plot forward. In terms of plot, El Camino is simple and moves at a very slow-burning pace, while it's full of surprises and callbacks to Breaking Bad, your enjoyment will very much depend on how much you care about Jesse as a character. It's also very much worth mentioning that there is absolutely nothing here for you if you've never seen Breaking Bad. 

While character is certainly the focus here, that's not to say El Camino's plot is lacking. The endgame and stakes are set up very quickly and we follow Jesse as he has to get to this predictable, but very satisfying place. While it wraps up neatly and delivers a very bittersweet ending to one of the best written characters on TV, Gilligan does throw some curve balls and takes the plot to some unexpected places, making for some very intense and stomach churning watching. 

This could have easily felt like an extended episode of the show, but thanks to the shows incredible cinematography and cinematic style already, the transition to film is pretty seamless. This is a gorgeous film, making use of the beautiful cinematography of New Mexico and using some wonderfully inventive visual styles that make what could seem like mundane scenes feel engrossing and fun to watch. Dave Porter's pulsating score is also worth mentioning, filled with some callbacks to Breaking Bad's score, but feeling new enough to be its own thing. 

What really struck me is just how sad I was when this ended. I never thought I'd ever see this character in anything ever again and now 6 years later it might seem like that will actually be the case, but I'm okay with that. Vince Gilligan did the impossible, added to an already satisfying finale of TV with an equally as satisfying epilogue that leaves the story in a place that feels perfect and one I hope they don't ever revisit.

I know we've got another season or two of Better Call Saul on the way, but it feels like this story beyond that sequel has been wrapped up. I'm just a little concerned by the title "El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie". Does Vince Gilligan plan to release more films from the Breaking Bad universe with that subtitle? I guess it depends on the success of this, but I'm torn on it. Part of me doesn't want them to risk diluting a perfect thing, but then again, Vince Gilligan has proved here that he'd only return to Breaking Bad if he had a story worth telling and he clearly knows what he's doing. Time will tell.


El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie is everything you could possibly want as a fan of Breaking Bad. It's a tense, emotional, beautifully shot ride that says goodbye to one of TV's most sympathetic and compelling characters thanks to Aaron Paul's powerhouse performance playing Jesse Pinkman one last time. Yeah, bitch.

Zombieland (2009) - 4K UHD Review

It's amazing to think that Zombieland is 10 years old now. A film I used to watch constantly when I was about 13. While my expectations for the sequel are pretty low, probably due to the fact Ruben Fleischer hasn't made a great film since this released and the trailers have been underwhelming to say the least, despite all the cast returning and still carrying the same wacky humour. I guess I'll find out in a couple of weeks.

I'd been wanting to revisit this for a while. Part of me wasn't sure it would hold up, but to my surprise, for the most part it's still great fun. I even watched it twice this week due to having to watch both the Blu-ray and the 4K for reasons. Some of the effects are a bit iffy as a lot of it is CGI that is very noticeable and out of place among the always much better practical effects that pop up every now and then. Everything else though, is pretty great.

Zombie comedies seem like something we get a lot, but for me nothing even come close to Shaun of the Dead when it comes to the horror comedy genre, Zombieland is still a worthy entry though. What really elevates this though is the excellent chemistry between the cast. Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Emma Stone and Abigail Breslin all work wonderfully well together as the dysfunctional make-shift family of strangers put together in this zombie apocalypse.


Harrelson is obviously the stand-out with his cowboy like personality and his deeply relatable quest to find a Twinkie (I remember this film kick-started my interest in Twinkies, which were impossible to find in the UK until well after this film released. Needless to say, once I had one, I understood why he wanted one). Eisenberg carries his usual dorky charm while being a pretty strong lead character as he works the audiences through his rules to surviving Zombieland. Then Stone and Breslin bring a lot of fun to their roles as they con their way through the Apocalypse. 

The balance of horror and humour is very solid. I was genuinely surprised at how well a lot of the humour still works 10 years on. A certain cameo is certainly the highlight and leads to a dark and hilarious resolution to that detour. Where the humour mostly works though is just the interactions between the leads as they slowly bond and learn about each other on their adventure. It even has just the right amount of heart, enough so that despite the poor trailers for the sequel and the fact the time might have passed, I'm still interested in spending more time with this group of people.

Forgot how stylish this was too. Fleischer's direction brings some unique visual touches, the opening titles to Metallica are wonderful and some of the slow-motion shots look really cool. I also love the use of random stuff going on around Zombieland like the "Zombie Kill of the Week" which is a great and funny gag, but it's never explained how anyone even knows about it, but it's stuff like that where Zombieland comes into its own and thrives on its unique personality. It's very clear that they wanted to expand the world, but it obviously never happened until now. Oh, and that cancelled Amazon Prime series no one ever talks about or remembers.


Zombieland still holds up very well thanks to its cast of fun and memorable characters, stylish visuals and solid mix of gore and laughs. The 4K disc is also another winner from Sony, who just continue to pump out amazing discs like no other studio. Great fun and always worth a revisit.

Joker (2019) - Film Review

This is a hard one to get into. The outrageous controversy surrounding this by fake woke Twitter who had made up their mind on this before even seeing it. It's kinda funny how an ironic and satirical movement of people online using Joker to mascot their joke about being radicalised incels become something the media deemed a genuine threat. In a way, it's the funniest thing about this all. What was interesting to me is the lack of awareness in people and how they couldn't see what these people were doing was satire. The whole Gang Weed thing is literally a joke, nothing more and the fools fell for it.

Getting to the actual film itself, it is a complete triumph. I had genuine concern that Todd Phillips had the maturity to make a film like this after the abysmal Hangover sequels and crappy comedies he usually does. Somehow he pulled it off. He's crafted an entry in the comic-book genre that is unlike anything that came before it. Joker is a character study first and foremost, as we see how Joaquin Phoenix's Arthur Fleck slowly starts to lose his mind and become the iconic Joker.

There was many risks involved in making this. The idea of demystifying on of cinemas greatest villains never seemed like a good idea, alienating fans of comic-book films who are so used to soulless CGI spectacle over anything close to substance that has more or less taken over the genre at this point and making such a dark, violent and adult film for a franchise that has mostly been aimed at teens and children. It was a risk for WB, one I'm glad they've taken, as I'm getting pretty sick of these interconnected universes and much prefer films that just tell their own story rather than trying so desperately to connect to other films and potential spin-offs. 

Going in, everyone pretty much knew the Martin Scorsese influences, which are pretty rampant. While Phillips pays homage to Scorsese's early films, this still has an identity of its own. This version of Gotham is a dark, ugly and unstable, much like the portrayal of New York in Taxi Driver. Crime is out of control, politicians are doing nothing to change the city and everyone is at breaking point. There is also a strong King of Comedy vibe (Robert De Niro even more or less plays the exact same character decades later).


While the political overtones of Joker are very apparent, the main focus really is on mental health. While there is no attempt to justify or make Fleck's actions anything close to heroic, it walks a fine line of showing what can happen if mentally unstable people do not get the help they need. There's no condoning their actions, but it's sad to watch and it's feels very honest, despite being an extreme portrayal. If people don't get the help they need before it's too late, then they lash out. 

That's the main thing Joker gets so right that could have gone painfully wrong. Fleck is not the hero of this story at all, you feel empathy for his descent into madness, but you never once see his actions as heroic or justifiable. It's very uncomfortable and horrible to watch as it just gets more extreme and out of control. This is far from the claims that the film is "Dangerous" and "Will encourage unstable loners to lash out" the media blew out of proportion for their ridiculous agenda. This film is a warning, not an encouragement. 

I should get to Phoenix himself. He's an actor I've always quite liked and has recently popped up in some films I've loved recently, so I was very interested to see how he would handle this role. To no ones surprise, he's quite incredible and is magnetic to watch. His performance is filled with so many ticks, physical transformations as he goes from, sad, funny, pathetic and terrifying with extreme ease. I know it's early to say, but this might be the greatest performance of The Joker we've ever had. Time will tell. Even with Phoenix being in nearly every scene of film, I was utterly compelled the whole way through as to where this was going thanks to his performance. I'd be amazed if an Oscar doesn't come his way next year, or at the very least, a nomination. I think it might be my favourite performance of the year. He takes a character that's been done to death and creates something new, tragic, beautiful and sad with it. 

While Joker does goes some places you would expect with the story, it does still go to some very surprising places, keeping me on edge pretty much the whole way. This is one of the most uncomfortable films I've seen in quite some time. The violence is messy, bloody and horrible to watch. The story also goes to some very interesting places as it builds up to its pretty shocking climax. 

While I haven't always been the biggest fan of a lot of Todd Phillips films, I've always given him credit for his visuals. His work always looks incredibly cinematic with a lot of stylish visuals and memorable imagery. Joker is no different, it's as gorgeous as it is ugly, making use of a diverse colour palette that and some disturbing imagery that is sure to become iconic down the line. There's even a weirdly comic dance number that worked far better than it should have. Oh, and I must give credit to Hildur Guonadottir's foreboding and tense score that really elevated the tension on screen. 


Todd Phillip's Joker is far more successful than anyone could have expecting, including me. It joins The Dark Knight and Logan as one of the few comic-book films I consider truly masterpieces. An unflinching, harrowing and deeply uncomfortable watch that features one of the best performances I've seen in recent years. I really hope Warner Bros continue to push the DC films in this direction because this really is something special and unlike anything in the genre. It might just be a game changer.
